If you haven't noticed by now, there are many types of domain extensions when dealing with domains on the internet. Even if you do not use the internet that much, you know the main ones guaranteed. So, with that said, let's break it down into the more common types of domain extensions for review and better understanding.
The types of domain extensions on the Web
- .COM = most popular. Short for "communications" or "commercial" which is basically a business or personal site. Also the most valuable when it comes to buying and selling domains.
- .ORG = A good ending for non-profits and other organizations. Short for, you guessed it, "Organization". These sources are more credible with their information.
- .EDU = Short for "education" - i.e. any accredited university or community college will have a ".edu" extension.
- .GOV = Short for "government" these sites are strictly for government pages and databases, so they are also very credible sources of information.
So, there you have it - the main types of domain extensions. Of course there are thousands, especially when you start considering the many country extensions you can have, but overall those are the main categories.
