Are you wondering what types of domain extensions there are? Well, the answer is that there really are many - especially when you start considering the fact that each country has its own domain extension to signify the source of the hosting or the location and language (like China's is .cn).
But there are other types of domain extensions that have to do more with the function or purpose of a site that many be more familiar. Here is a basic run down:
The types of domain extensions - Familiar names
- .COM - a communication or commerce site, this is usually the most popular and used for business or personal purposes.
- .ORG - means "organization" and usually for non-profits or social groups. These have more credibility generally because of their nature.
- .NET - a "network" of people usually like a social network or writer's guild. Useful for resources for individuals or professionals looking to connect with others in their field.
- .GOV - a "government" site.
Although there are many others out there, these are a basic few that you will most likely run into 90% of the time.
