There are many, many types of domain extensions out there and each has its importance and value. Based on their designation, the domains you select can often have a large impact on their traffic because certain types of domain extensions are perceived in certain ways. A ".com" for example is perceived in the public as more credible and usable than a ".tv" or ".mobi", it's more "official." In the academic world, however, they are looking for anything *but* ".com"s, and rather ".org" or ".edu".

So what do all these types of domain extensions mean, anyway? Here is a rundown of the most widely used.

.COM

These sites are generally businesses of some sort or informational portals. The most popular extension, this is the one people know about.

.ORG, .EDU

These sites are more credible and usually often are dedicated to a school or non-profit organization., though, remember that just because it has ".ORG" in it doesn't mean it is always credible.

.TV, .MOBI, .US, etc.

These extensions generally are different types of domain extensions associated with how you access them. .MOBI, for example, refers to accessing it through your mobile phone. They aren't as hot as a .COM, though still very popular and growing.
