There are many types of domain extensions out there, and understanding what each is good for can really help you market what you've got.

The types of domain extensions

  • .COM - these are the most popular because they are commercial/communication sites. They are really good for business domains and can be very valuable pieces of virtual real estate if you sink your teeth into something good.

  • .ORG - short for "organization", these are usually seen in non-profit organizations and interest groups. They are a lot easier to find, though some people who get a .COM site will often block off .ORG and .NET as well, so be careful. Nevertheless, these are great for stating that your business is a more honorable one.

  • .NET - somewhat of a 2nd class .COM, these types of domain extensions are short for "network" and usually is a site dedicated to blogs or forums, and helps promote other sites as well. Though, the sound of ".NET" can also be catchy enough to make it into a rivalry against .COMs, so you can sometimes get a good deal on just a .NET for your business.
