There are many types of domain extensions - and knowing which ones there are can really help in choosing the right domain for you. Below is a description of some of the main types of domain extensions you can find.

The types of domain extensions

  • .COM = most popular and usually most expensive. These are marketable, good domains and serve a general purpose of communicating to the world what you've got.
  • .ORG = organization websites usually for non-profits or private groups. Great for giving your site that more "credible" feel.
  • .NET = sometimes can be like a semi-good .COM, but othertimes it works better depending on your domain and what you offer. Usually good for network sites like skill unions and such.
  • .MOBI = a growing domain extension because of the millions using cell phones with internet browsers today, and a good investment for the future.
  • .GOV = government related domain extensions
  • .US/etc. = these are country coded extensions and are not usually that valuable here in the states, though sometimes they can work pretty cleverly as in the example of deli.co.us and others
