With the internet growing in complexity and recent news that the ICAAN will be changing their name assigning protocol - the possibilities for types of domain extensions are almost infinite. The exciting news is that anyone can be apart of that now in almost every country on the world.
With that said there are a few main types of domain extensions that generally all of these will fall into once you take out the language barriers. Here's a quick guide:
The types of domain extensions fall into 3 categories - .com, .net and .org. Of course there are many more out there but these are the most common types I've run into on the net. Usually the first is having to do with personal sites or business sites (commerce, communication). The second is often associated with networks of niche groups who have a common interest. Forums and such. The last is usually a more "credible" source since many non-profit businesses or organizations generally have a ".org" extension.
So now that's what I can break the most of these extensions into. There are plenty more out there and goodness knows how many more we will see in the coming years.
